Nokia: 2011 in review. Happy New year & may your year be amazing everyday

The Beginning:
coming into 2011, the word to describe Nokia was "struggling", though surviving solely on the sale of the N8 from the previous year, Nokia tried to continue its momentum with the release of the E7  (the latest successor to the most popular Nokia 9000 communicator from back in the '90s, but its success was short lived largely due to the aged symbian o/s. Nokia was doomed.

the Decision:
CEO Elop, made an announcement, talking about ending symbian in 2016 and it wasnt a viable contender in the smartphone ecosystem and everyone remembers this one, likening symbian to a burning ship (titanic anyone?), this got symbian lovers enraged, including shareholders, cos from then on nokia's stock dropped faster than a 100pound rock from the roof of a 200 floor skycraper (i've got no better analogy for this),

the Partnership:
Elop made an even bigger announcement, of a mutual partnetship with microsoft's mobile division, Windows Phone, calling it an integration of good hardware with smart software, skeptics (including me) wondered how nokia would possibly gain from this partnership, because though Nokia was failing, it still had the biggest chunk of the mobile market (still does) and wp7 phones were so insignificant that they had no place in the ecosystem, it seemed microsoft had the most to gain from this.

The Aftermath:
following the announcements of Symbian's future, windows partnership, Nokia outsourced symbian development to a 3rd party software company Accenture, even made major job cuts in its finnish HQ, resulting in protests from disgruntled employees, all this while their market value plummeted, they were doing so bad rumour began to swirl around of a possible dismantle of the Finnish giant and Microsoft buying Nokia's mobile division, that of course never happened

the N9:
running on the Meego platform, this phone was doomed before it was even released to the market, this wonderful piece of artwork and its sweet sweet operating system and revolutionary swipe feature, showed what nokia was capable of , but it never got a chance to prove its worth are it was labeled a market distruptor, a passer-by!the first and last of its kind,

Re-image. Re-Brand. Re-Nokia & the Symbian Facelift:
While Nokia is still number in emerging markets, they intend to keep it that way, releasing a string of new symbian belle devices, the 603 700 701, Symbian belle.
Nokia also began rebranding its image, gradually they scrapped the ovi brand, replacing it with nokia, the ovi store became the nokia store, ovi maps became nokia maps... and most recently the symbian belle update that give symbian o/s a facelift was also rebranded to nokia belle and subsequent updates to follow.

the Amazing Happened:

the biggest news of the year, late october Lumia series devices were launched, the Lumia 710 Nokia Sabre, and lumia 800 Nokia Searay, this was big news as no one expected such a quick turn-around, the newborn babies of the nokia+wp7 union were here and we were impressed. so much so that the lumia 800 sold out from major carrier stores.

the Future:
i have always wondered how nokia will do in the US market, they face steep competition, but this Jan. we will the sale of lumia 710 on tmobile and the announcement of the lumia 800 and Nokia Ace, how the US market will respond to these introductions will be very interesting.

2012 should be a very very busy year for Nokia, expect new phones, tablets and innovative technologies this year.

to 2012!

Lync 2010 available for wp7 phones, iphone & android, Symbian left behind?

So Lync is recently became available for android phones, iphone version was already released earlier and it has since been available for windows phone.
we can only assume it'll be a matter of weeks before its available for Symbian, but then again with Nokia you never know, with Belle update delayed till February, we might not see any Microsoft apps till then.

exclusive: US T-Mobile Lumia710 hands on pics + T-Mobile TV + 25gb skydrive

i got the chance to play with the unreleased Lumia 710 for T-Mobile, it runs windows phone 7.5 Mango like the rest, its a nice piece of hardware like most nokia devices, nice feel to the back cover which also comes in different colours.
what i dont like is the physical buttons, i don't see the need for it, but then again it's probably nokia's low end wp7 device.
another expectional quality is the display, its out of this world, with a TFT capacitive screen, with 480x800pixels resolution, gorilla glass and CBD (clear black display).

the lumia710 will also come with tmobile TV, and 25gb skydrive for storing your pics, docs in the cloud, pretty awesome!

the lumia710 is set to go on sale on Jan 11th, you can get it at a t-mobile store and a microsoft store near you.

Bill gate's daughter holding a Nokia WP7? or iphone?

TMZ paparazzi got a pic of bill gates' daughter taking a light stroll with her mum in Australia, holding a device thatmight be an unreleased Nokia WP7 (wishful thinking) or just an iphone or maybe its a zune mp3 player!!
i don't think bill gates will like that his kid has an iphone, so i will go with my wishful thinking and say thats a Nokia wp7 phone haha!!

Nokia Carmode with mirrorlink; pricey-Tag $19.99

apparently there are 2 versions of the recently released "nokia carmode" app,
the one we saw earlier here only works on your phone & a car holder and it's free, but you wouldn't be able to use it with a car that has a mirrorlink infotainment system.

the version that does support this feature is "Nokia with mirrorlink...

MirrorLink offers a seamless way to connect your smartphone to your car. Enter your car, plug the phone into the infotainment system with a USB cable and immediately enjoy your phone applications on the in-car display. Note: this application requires a MirrorLink compatible car infotainment system.

This one will cost you $19.99!!

Symbian is King of the world, ranked above iOS, android

Symbian is ranked #1 smartphone operating system for 2011. according to statcounter's report, symbian finished the year with 33.63% market share, well over apple and android who have about 22% each.
this might seem to good to be true, but symbian versions: s40 s60 S^3, includes low-end devices, recently released range of dual-sim phones, mid-range phones to the high-end, so when all this is put in consideration, Nokia tends to everyone from all walks of life! so this recently released ranking should be of no surprise.
it will be interesting to see what happens come 2016, when Nokia is planned to terminate Symbian for good.

Microsoft Store: A Hi-tech Store ahead of its time!

As we anticipate the introduction of Nokia Lumia devices here in the US, i decided to take a look at one of the stores where you can get these phones, i'm not talking about at&t or T-mobile stores or Best Buy.

Incase, you dont't know, Microsoft launched a chain of stores around the US, so far there are 14 locations in total. below:

I happened to visit one of these stores and i was really impressed with the environment, the level of professionalism of the staff, they really knew what they were talking about and thats what really stands out about these stores.

you can demo/buy Laptops, Desktops, Windows Phones (though no Lumia device yet) and enjoy xbox360 kinect and demo games too, and the staff is always an arms length away to answer any questions.
Being in this store, made me wonder if nokia has any plans of opening stores (apart from the new york location) soon, it would only make sense to do so, if they want to make an impact in the US market.
Microsoft plans to open more stores, so if there isn't one near you, be patient, it will happen
check out my sights & sights from one of the microsoft stores:

App review: "Keep it on" for symbian anna/belle devices

Running this app will keep your phone unlocked and with the screensaver disabled. Easy to use and helpful for example meanwhile using it on the car holder.
i think the name says it all: "keep it on"
just turn it on, and never worry about your phone going to screensaver of locking up, its best use is while driving and you have your phone in a car holder, while listening to music or navigation.
